New photography, illustration, and other art books that just might be the cure for the common coffee table.
The Ex Factor
Based on the game Exquisite Corpse, The Exquisite Book ($30) enlisted 100 indie artists to continue the illustrated story of the artists before them. Accordion-style pages pull out, so you can make the connection from drawing to drawing and artist to artist.
House Party
Amber waves of grain are wonderful. However, some of the USA’s most beautiful sights are found inside, and decorator Thomas Jayne showcases 50 of those in The Finest Rooms in America ($50). Among the wide-ranging collection of spectacular rooms dating from the 18th century to present day, the most glorious are our digs on page 45. (That last bit is a highly false statement.)

League of Their Own
Leave it to the Japanese to turn an assortment of photographs taken of prepsters on Ivy League campuses during the late ’60s into a fashion frenzy. The recently translated English version of Take Ivy ($25) is a welcome addition to your shelf of sailing manuals and Kennedy biographies.
Fur Sure
A mix of works from writers and artists like Robert Watts, David Antin, and Jackson Mac Low that have gone unpublished since the original ’60s release, the Great Bear (the Great Pamphlet Series) ($350) is a handsome box set. Apart from being a cultural watermark, a stack of zines is much less intimidating than a 500-page novel.
