Bursting with crop tops, harem pants, and body armor, our summer wardrobe has been described by some as fad frenzied. (We prefer awesome. Eclectic, perhaps.)
But for those rare times when gingham rompers won’t cut it (sigh), Brooklyn-based designer Dona Monroe’s debut collection of classic frocks is our go-to. Following stints in seven cities and four countries, Monroe found her way to a fashion publishing firm in NYC, where she became frustrated by the lack of sophisticated day-to-night pieces in her closet.
The solution: design her own tightly edited line of everyday little black dresses made from lightweight, sand-washed silk (for edgy, downtown appeal). With help from her pattern-making mother, Monroe has updated the all-season fabric in flattering silhouettes from the ’70s and ’80s (viz, the boatneck mini and plunging, ruffled number).
We plan to gussy up the V-neck shift with a pair of bronze earrings and a boyfriend blazer for work Monday a.m. Join us.
Available online at donamonroe.com, $290-$330.
