Greetings, earthlings.
Another Earth
Mike Cahill’s compelling debut drama is a fascinating film unearthed at this year’s Sundance. The flick shoots for the stars with a bit of science fiction in the form of Earth 2, a second world hosting a second you. Star (and co-writer) Brit Marling, playing a girl seeking redemption after killing a man’s family, is stellar, while Fall on Your Sword’s thumping sound is out of this world. We dare you not to give it a standing ovation.
It’s like: 21 Grams making Contact.
Take: A Trekkie and a Milky Way.
Premieres: July 20
Life in a Day
The famed Scott brothers break from high-intensity fiction to walk a Saturday in someone else’s shoes — more than 80,000 someones to be exact. A global production that would make Danny Boyle proud, the doc takes YouTube-submitted home videos (from birthing to free-falling) and weaves them into a narrative to reveal the good, the bad, and the ugly that happened on July 24, 2010. And we can’t stop thinking about it.
It’s like: The mother lode of uploads.
Take: 90 minutes for yourself.
Premieres: July 29
Attack the Block
Don’t let the premise fool you. Yes, furry, black-as-night aliens are invading. Yes, the fate of South London relies on a group of pickpocketing hoodlums. And, yes, there are bloody kills aplenty, of course. But Joe Cornish’s comical debut, complete with one-liners like, “It’s raining Gollums,” is a surefire crowd-pleaser. No, really, it won the Audience Award at this year’s SXSW.
It’s like: The Sandlot meets Gremlins.
Take: The gang.
Premieres: July 29
The Future
We’ve been waiting since January’s Sundance to let this cat out of the bag. Queen of quirk Miranda July’s sophomore drama calls upon a couple who has decided to rescue Paw Paw, a neglected and hopeful chatty kitty who also narrates the story. Believing the impending adoption means life’s over, the two set out to check off their to-do list, which includes making strange interpretive dance videos and selling baby trees door to door.
It’s like: An unopened present.
Take: Me and You and Everyone We Know.
Premieres: July 29
