Smart as nails.
A Bag of Hammers
That’s a metaphor. Kinda dark, kinda funny, kinda genius — the SXSW hit is a literal mixed bag of emotions. When you’re not chuckling at Jason Ritter and Jake Sandvig playing misguided rogues who rake in the dough via grand theft, you’re tearing up at their Big Daddy notions to take a neglected boy under their wing. Throw in Rebecca Hall, Amanda Seyfried, and a hopeful-but-ambiguous ending, and you’ve got some food for thought.
It’s like: Miss March meets Hesher.
Take: Family of faux.
Premieres: Today
Lovely Molly
Lovely she is — when she’s not palling around with the devil. Creator of a witch named Blair, Eduardo Sánchez mixes his pioneered first-person horror with a fresh ghost narrative, growling soundscape by prog-rock band Tortoise (who better for a slow burner, right?), and one hell of a scream queen. It’s an all-around challenging debut, most of which newcomer Gretchen Lodge spends muddy, strung out, or naked — and one we spent in a cold sweat, quietly repeating “Molly, you in danger, girl.”
It’s like: Repulsion meets The Silent House.
Take: Your main squeeze. (A hand/warm body/fluffy pillow, you will need.)
Premieres: May 18
Moonrise Kingdom
Wes Anderson will soon set up camp on the Croisette to open Cannes (deep breaths). His latest eccentricity expo about a Boy Scout and his flame running away as a storm rolls in stars usual suspects Murray and Schwartzman, two little newbies, and greats like Bruce Willis and Ed Norton, hopefully circa Leaves of Grass with no Stone in sight. Don’t miss traces of The Darjeeling Limited, as Anderson and Roman Coppola share the pen once again.
It’s like: A good moon on the rise.
Take: A match.
Premieres: May 25
