In these times of small-batch big brands and fair trade everything else, it all starts to sound like a load of co-opted cow patty.
Unless it’s not.
With her conscientious new jewelry line, Mettle, designer Brianna Hallihan keeps it real — and breathtakingly beautiful.
The Central Saint Martin’s fashion school grad was so inspired by treks between her native Australia and Indonesia that she co-founded an artisan-run Cambodian workshop to produce her statement designs.
Hammered silver- and gold-plated belts, gladiator cuffs, and bags are sourced from Khmer Rouge bomb remnants and finished with bits of recycled Lucite. A gilded shoulder pouch and fisty cuff bracelets — which double as anklets using an adjustable chain-link clasp — manage to be both hard-core and graceful.
Bonus: The line’s mostly $100-range prices are as nice as its backstory. Resulting in ethical fashion we’d (gasp) wear.
For reals.
