Get the Snuggie.
Fairhaven
Like fuzz balls on a Fair Isle sweater, Chris Messina is everywhere. On camera, prime timing with Mindy Kaling then fluffing his whiskers in Argo. Off, scripting this warmhearted drama — about three friends reuniting in snowy Massachusetts for a funeral — with pal Tom O’Brien. The film stars Messina as a bad boy and O’Brien as a Tom Brady wannabe with a New England-size chip on his shoulder.
It’s like: Beautiful Girls set in a Norman Rockwell painting.
Take: A first-class snuggler.
Premieres: Today (on demand January 15)
Supporting Characters
Alex Karpovsky. Ring a bell? Shoshanna’s crack spirit guide on Girls? There we go. Switching seats with Lena Dunham (she cameos), Karpovsky drives the witty bromance that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival into George-and-Jerry territory. As Nick, he and best bud Darryl need to cut the crap — they’re editing a film that’s headed for the can — while keeping their love lives out of the dump.
It’s like: Modern Romance starring HBO’s funniest.
Take: Your main man.
Premieres: On demand January 23
John Dies at the End
Or does he? Bill and Ted, Tucker and Dale, meet Dave and John (that’s him in the scary mask), the latest blunderbusses to embark on an excellent adventure. Horror fans, let’s go on a genre-bender fueled by Soy Sauce, a drug whose side effects aren’t limited to battling meat monsters and body snatchers. Free-wheeling Midnight Madness like that earned it a third-place People’s Choice Award at TIFF.
It’s like: The Cabin in the Woods goes Kaboom.
Take: Men in black, ghost busters — really anyone down for a bogus journey.
Premieres: January 25 (on demand now)
