You are not getting very sleepy.
Trance
Danny Boyle’s (a.k.a. the guy who can make a sewing circle look as exciting as a sword fight) follow-up to 127 Hours is an exhilarating, 101-minute escapade through the human psyche. Filmed before his Olympics display, the neon-saturated trip stars James McAvoy and Vincent Cassel as art nappers who team with a hypnotist (Rosario Dawson) to retrieve the whereabouts of Goya’s “Witches in the Air.”
It’s like: The Thomas Crown Affair meets Shallow Grave.
Take: Fellow thrill-seekers.
Premieres: Today
Mud
Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, this soon-to-be classic thriller — Jeff Nichols doesn’t miss. His latest festival hit (nominated for the Palme d’Or) plays out like a great American novel: Ellis and Neckbone find a fugitive (who goes by Mud) on an island in the Mississippi and help him get back to his love (who goes by Juniper). Matthew McConaughey stuck the title role (though Nichols’s main man, Michael Shannon, does make an appearance), and Reese Witherspoon plays his berry.
It’s like: The R-Rated Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Take: Muddy Buddies.
Premieres: April 26
Sun Don’t Shine
Hours on end in a car with your S.O. is enough to make you want to kill someone. No Funyun. Taking that literally: Crystal and Leo have a secret, and it’s dead in the trunk (pause for Big Gulp). The cryptic road trip reveals a little more with every pit stop, with help from multihyphenate ingenue Amy Seimetz. Get to know her: She steps in front of the lens for Upstream Color and The Killing season three.
It’s like: Mad Love, True Romance, Bellflower — all that and a bag of chips.
Take: Your jerky.
Premieres: April 26 (in theaters and on demand)
Refill the snacks. We have more movies to get through.
